How to Differentiate Between Top Quality Cowhides and Inferior Cowhides

Chrome Tanned-  This process  involves  curing  the hides with chromium salts, resulting in soft, durable hides with a clean sheen that are resistant to bacteria and high temperatures, and won’t shed under normal use.  You can identify chrome tanned hides by their gray backs and supple texture.

Inferior Cowhides:

Tanned With Vegetable Oil Or Fish Oil-  These hides are identified by a stiff, dull coat and have a strong chemical smell.  The backs with a green color smell like dirty tennis shoes or a commercial kitchen.  Hides with a white, beige or brown back  are the lowest quality, and have the aroma of an outhouse.
