Office/Home Office
L-shaped desks, executive desks, writing desks, modular desks, secretaries, credenzas, hutches – help! What to choose? Where do I begin? First, decide what your space is used for. Do you see clients? Will you share the space with your spouse or co-worker? Will the area be used by your kids for homework as well as your office? Do you work on a laptop or CPU? How large is your space? Let’s look at the reasoning behind desks?

L-shaped desks are typically used in large spaces. They offer CPU storage, cord management, power directors, file drawers and plenty of worktop space. They are great for greeting clients or a luxury if you have the space.

Executive desks do not typically offer CPU storage. Instead, it is common to use a credenza or credenza and hutch behind the executive desk to store your CPU and have additional work surface. In most cases they feature, keyboard trays and file drawers. An executive desk is grand and looks gorgeous as you enter an office or home office. So many homes have home offices that are seen from the front door. So, first impressions are important here.

Writing desks are smaller, take up much less space, though in most cases should offer some file drawer space along with keyboard pull-out trays. Writing desks are generally more feminine in look and can be used in a variety of rooms in the home or as a smaller workspace or receptionist desk in an office setting.

Modular desks are different from all desk options. They offer everything; keyboard trays, flip-up document holders, CPU and printer storage, utility drawers, file drawers, open or door bookcases and cord management. They are also “modular”, which means, that you can configure them to customize the space available whether it’s a home office, office, hobby or homework area. Modular office desks are most typically feature partners desks or peninsula desks. They will often accommodate two people working on both sides.

A secretary is a wonderful alternative when space or need for a much smaller desk is what’s on the menu. They can be used in any room in the home; a bedroom, kitchen, foyer or office. They will typically offer storage in the hutch and base, laptop workspace, mail slots and much more. A secretary is not only functional, it is decorative.

Choosing a credenza and hutch will save space in any work area. They are built to be placed against the wall leaving room for either floor space or an executive or l-shaped desk. Credenza and hutches often offer file drawers, CPU and printer storage, cord management, task lighting, power directors etc...

While you are shopping for your quality office, home office, bedroom, dining room or master bedroom furniture, use a roll of colored tape and map out your ideal room by sticking tape to the floor/carpet where the furniture you are deciding on may be placed. Measure, measure, measure and create your room with pleasure! This will outline your space size and give you a perspective of what will work. It will also eliminate a common mistake of purchasing furniture that is either too small or even worse, too large for your room. Measure, measure, measure and create your room with pleasure!
